As an altered human, Orion is no longer capable of coming down with the illness that has slowly destroyed much of the world, which makes him highly effective against husks. Combat is something that he is doing his best to excell at -- and he even allows Pria to help train him and teach him several basics of survival while in the heat of battle.
In many ways, Orion is the group's fussy feline who only trusts those who know how to treat it properly. Orion cares for people very deeply ... he is just exhausted by loss.
Rochdale has always had a very tight-knit community; they take care of their own --- often from birth until circumstances put them within the graveyard that sits at the Northwest of the town. The people here live quiet, simple lives, and whenever something happens that demands cooperation it doesn't take long for everyone to step forward to help.
This is what happened when two loving parents passed away due to illness and left behind a young child. The entire town stepped up --- and people took turns watching the child as one of their own without much complaint. This child, who would later choose the name Orion, grew up moving from home to home and never really settling down with one family in particular. He happily repaid the town by taking up jobs that others disliked, staying out of trouble, and finding plenty of ways to help individuals when they required it.
Never once has Orion disliked the town. Never once has he wanted to leave it --- but a day came when he would have to do so, anyway. Men in white appeared one day, demanding a single sacrifice just as they had in every town before. Their reasoning? A means of saving the world --- of completing research that could make things better for all. The town was instructed to draw straws to decide who would be the one leaving. One by one, people drew theirs all while Orion patiently waited. Quiet, knowing. When it became his turn to draw he wasn't surprised to see a mark at the end of his --- chosen for this great honor, discarded as one of the only people in town without anyone or anything to lose. Families remained unbroken, even when Orion left with the strangers to undergo experimentation.
Two years later, Orion returned to Rochdale with a new set of ears and a tail not unlike a cat's. The experimentations were completed, but the findings were still unclear. Orion found less people to greet his return; the sickness spreading and taking many lives. Families now broken, Rochdale started to fall apart over time ... and Orion did his best to pay back those who helped him get so far.
Orion eventually took up the job of protecting the graveyard --- isolated at the edge of town, it became his job to dig graves of those who fell ill or died from other causes as Rochdale started to crumble.
Eventually, Orion and the Mayor were the only two left. One day a merchant rolled into the ghost town, hopeful for trade, and the Mayor convinced him to take whatever he'd like --- and he also begged him to take Orion with him. Not wanting Orion to stay and die alone in a town that didn't appreciate him enough, the Mayor instead asked Orion to continue his life on the road in hopes of him finding a reason to live for many years.
